English term or phrase: universities and colleges

To me it seems redundant as both the words "universities" and "colleges" refer to "universités" in French, maybe I am missing something?

Explanation:
It is redundant too, but it has the benefit to keep two words.
We may use "faculté" for a specific subject

Asker: Whilst it might be a good translation in particular contexts, I am still left with the impression that it doesn't really match what colleges are in North America or in England. Maybe it's not possible to find an equivalent?

To add to Lorraine's comment above, I would say that yes, there is CEGEP in Québec which can give you a stand-alone certificate or act as prep school for university, but in other provinces such as Ontario, college is distinct from university, not a step between high school and university. In our graduating year, our guidance counselors helped us decide which way to go, depending on our career path; mechanics, horticulturists, lab technicians went to college and architects, lawyers and journalists went to university. Tongue-in-cheek, one counselor said, "If you want a job, go to college; if you want an education, go to university."
