English term or phrase: this is quite out of my syllabus
Hello everyone,

Ritu's grandfather Hi, Aman. How are you?
Aman Fit and fine, as always.
Ritu's grandfather Good, my blessings. Sit.
Ritu's grandfather I assume all is well at home.
Aman Yes, grandfather.
Ritu's grandfather When did you return?
Ritu What boring questions, grandfather!
Ritu Wait. Let me ask.
Ritu So, Aman, what's up with Neelima?
Ritu's grandfather Well..
Ritu's grandfather ..****this is quite out of my syllabus*****.
Ritu's grandfather Are you up for some hot cottage cheese dishes?
Aman Yes, grandfather.
Ritu's grandfather Very good, very good. Good boy.
Ritu So?
Aman She dumped me.

Does the phrase in question mean "I dont know anything about it"?

Thank you.

Selected answer:I will keep out of this.
Explanation:
The question -- What's up with Neelima?" -- seems to be about a relationship. The grandfather thinks it inappropriate that he should join in this conversation between young people. (He actually says: "This question is out of my syllabus.")

This is not in my dictionary/This does not compute

Explanation:
He misused the word "syllabus" to say that he does not understand the jargon.

does not compute = Please say that again in plain English.

This is none of my business/ I'm not getting involved

Explanation:
or "I'm staying out of this"

I am giving this answer based on Piyush's understanding of the Hindi original i.e that the grandfather thinks it inappropriate that he should get involved or join in this conversation between young people.
If the literal translation actually is: "This question is out of my syllabus." I would take it to mean it is none of his business and is not his concern so he won't get involved..

beyond me

Explanation:
It is an expression.

Can be vague, as it has a lot of different meanings.
