Once she had succumbed to a fit of sneezing and he had pressed his handkerchief upon her, warm, from his trouser pocket. She had tried not to use it , trusting to his impeccable manners not to ask for its return, aware already that later she would put it away unwashed in her drawer beside the book which pressed one of the *embarrassing* marigolds.

preliminary context:
On another occasion, at the Peggy Guggenheim museum, he had made her blush horribly by pointing out the tumescent angel who exposes his proud member in all its glory to the passing watercraft. Afterwards he had bought her marigolds from a narrow shop crammed with flowers, and she knew it was by way of apology for having embarrassed her.

На мой взгляд, возможны такие варианты перевода этой части фразы (beside the book which pressed one of the embarrassing marigolds):

...рядом с книгой, между страницами которой был заложен цветок календулы, один взгляд на который приводил ее в смущение.

...рядом с книгой, между страницами которой был заложен цветок календулы, при взгляде на который на ум приходила та неловкая ситуация (или "который заставлял мысленно возвращаться к той неловкой ситуации").

Вместо "заложен" можно также сказать "распростерт" (все же художественный текст). Конечно, второй вариант перевода можно перефразировать, чтобы было понятно, о какой неловкой ситуации речь, если контекст не идет в тексте непосредственно перед этой фразой, но это Вы и так понимаете.

agree  Tatyana Leshkevich: Согласна со всем, кроме "календулы". Это ведь не фармакологич. контекст. Просто странно, что marigold в переводе - и бархатцы, и ноготки, а ведь цветы-то разные. Думаю, что всё-таки это были бархатцы, потому что дарить женщине ноготки - это уж слишком...
