"... cover recent debates, controversies, and latest research on social inequality. It will concentrate on recent theoretical and empirical developments in the sociology of social stratification and inequality.
The course will be organized in thematic blocks, where each block reflects stages of individuals’ life courses and the main factors that lead to differences in socio-economic performance. During the first sessions we will discuss the impact that social origin has on individuals’ future perspectives. After discussing the influence of parental characteristics and resources as well as their investment decisions, we will investigate educational attainment. An important part of the course will focus on different aspects of the labor market. Finally, important aspects of family sociology will be discussed and more recent topics like cognitive and non-cognitive abilities will be considerated.
The emphasis of this course is on the combination of theoretical background literature and the current empirical contributions in each field. Additionally we will analyze new trends of research in social inequality that have been traditionally understudied. "
