There is a certain usefulness in regarding the market as a whole in studying Dow Theory, just so long as we keep in mind that the Averages we are studying are generalities (high-order abstractions), and the rules for determining their trend apply to these generalities and not necessarily to each and every stock listed on the Stock Exchange.
