Ein Switch realisiert im Unterschied zu einem Hub eine direkte Verbindung zwischen zwei angeschlossenen Stationen, die über ein eigenes Kabel an ihn angeschlossen sind. Die eingehenden Datenpakete werden daraufhin untersucht für welche Hardware-Zieladresse sie bestimmt sind um sie an den Port weiterzuleitet, an den das Endgerät mit dieser Adresse angeschlossen ist. Am Switch-Port lassen sich auch Hubs anschliessen. Intern wird dem entsprechenden Port zugeordnet eine Tabelle mit den MAC-Adressen aller am Hub angeschlossenen Geräte verwaltet.
