ultrasound transducer of 100 mm in Pouch of Douglas Explanation: I guess that the word columna refers to the device, not to the vertebral column -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 37 mins (2013-10-04 09:04:15 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Or maybe according to the suggerence given by Neil, is the size of the pouch. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 38 mins (2013-10-04 09:04:54 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- sorry, suggestion Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recto-uterine_pouch |

100 mm (column pressure) of water in Douglas pouch Explanation: Basing the idea of the below....but I'm not sure how a medic would word it to incorporate the Douglas part. But it's ****definitely a water mamometer**** there are lots of reference to measuring "ascitic pressure", "osmotic kidney pressure" and "inter-abdominal pressure" with a water mamometer so that's where the column and "mm" come into. ;@) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1493732/ Manipulation of ****ascitic fluid pressure*** in cirrhotics to optimize hemodynamic and renal function. J A Savino, T Cerabona, N Agarwal, and D Byrne Author information ► Copyright and License information ► See "Discussion" on page 509. This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. Abstract Intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), measured via a transurethral catheter, hemodynamic, and renal functions were evaluated in 25 cirrhotic patients admitted to ICU with variceal bleeding, tense ascites, and peripheral edema. In patients with an IAP greater than 25 cm H2O, a paracentesis was performed to decrease the IAP by 10 cm H2O. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2013-10-04 10:23:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Articles OSMOTIC PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS OF SERUM AND ASCITIC FLUID IN PATIENTS WITH CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER http://www.jci.org/articles/view/102894 It can be measured in mm (Hg) (as I first suggested in the discussion) but it would appear that the values mentioned in your text are for H2O, see the ref. below for an example of Hg: "The variation in hydrostatic hepatic vein pressures, pressure differences and ***ascitic fluid pressures*** (when measured at different locations within the liver and peritoneal space during a single examination) was ****1.5, 1.0 and 1.0 mmHg*** (SD), respectively.
