Incidentally, particularly in Britain and "the colonies", the middle-class speakers would still use "common", which semantically is almost a karbon-copy of пошлый. However, apart of rapidly becoming somewhat "victorian" this usage may be quite confusing in the context of a dating site. In turn, "common" is a step away from "vulgar", which refers to "vulgus"/plebs. So, at least in some context, пошлый may also be rendered as "vulgar" "low-grade", etc. The coice is vast rather than narrow.
