Who said it refers to the shift back to the whole band playing after a solo passage (or vice versa) so Nat here at the piano wad a madter at sussing out the tipping point. Aha so it's more than improvising.

My first comment was that improvisation is the same in both languages, so I reckon most French writers meaning improvisation would put improvisation, don't you think?
Incidentally, I do know what improvisation means in musical terms, and it's common to all jazz pianists. Goes without saying.
You have missed the point that the expression used here just conceivably refers to communication of ideas between players. Using "prompts", or, then again, giving them to the others.
I repeat; What we need is a French jazzman to confirm and explain the expression.

@kashew: What you and ormiston describe in your latest discussion posts ("picking up from") is, essentially, thematic improvisation. Jazz improvisation consists of creating a musical phrase or passage from a chord progression or from a pre-existing melody. I believe the latter is what's being described in the original French passage. Nat King Cole was one of the masters of jazz piano and improv. @ ormiston: yes, that's exactly what I see happening here in my mind's eye... but I can't think of a nice neat way to say it without using a long phrase in English.

I would be wary of the previous translation, improvisation.
A French jazzman is needed to confirm my hunch, but I feel it corresponds to :
relancer, verbe transitif
Sens 1 Renvoyer. Synonyme renvoyer Anglais to throw back
Sens 2 Solliciter quelqu'un à nouveau. Synonyme harceler
Sens 3 FAIRE REPARTIR. Anglais to boost, to relaunch
