"butts into" was the first thing that popped into my mind in connection with "упирается". But upon further consideration of the subject, I figured that "ends against the mountains" will be somewhat better, even if simply because I could not find in the Internet any mentions of the former, but a few of the latter. "Abut" definitely won't do. But I still think that the meaning of "упирается" is the best conveyed by "butts into," although, perhaps, not in this case.

What former and latter do you mean? Both "тесно огибая горы" и "тесно прижимаясь к горам" mean practically the same - the road goes closely following the mountain line. And what we have in this case is a road that ends/butts into - упирается - at the mountains.

Никогда не слыхал такого выражения. Вы, наверное, имеете в виду "Уповать на Бога". Или же Опираться на Бога.
