What is the difference between special chemistry and applied chemistry?

Applied chemistry deals with practical uses of chemical products, chemical engineering and manufacture. Examples could be: fertilizers manufacturing, glues, detergents for washing, etc.

Special chemistry mainly deals with analysis and design of rare substances, for example the complex method of detecting presence of HIV virus, or determining hormone levels from human blood is a form of special chemistry.

Sometimes are these terms in speech interchanged, but the general meaning is towards "applied -> mass production, find a practical use, or design for use" and "special -> highly qualified chemical engineers designing rare substances or doing such analysis"
