Explanation:
cf GDT

Depends a bit on what the original was as to what form the 'contretype' is going to take.

If you don't know that, then the EN term is no more nor less ambiguous than the FR one ;-)

agree  philgoddard: We don't have the full context, but it sounds like a catalogue or something, so this is a more appropriate term in my opinion.
21 mins
  -> Thanks

agree  Tony M: This would be the correct technical term for one particular 'contretype' — but quite wrong for certain others; however, I think in this instance this is the most plausible explanation.

  -> Thanks

disagree  Helen Shiner: Sorry to disagree, but 'reproduction' has such a negative connotation in this context. It is much more likely to be a photo made from a negative taken of the original photo. Probably because original neg missing and photo in poor state. Or see my ref.
3 hrs
  -> How can one say it's not a reproduction (or copy)?

neutral  Helen Shiner: This ignores the fact that there is an original photograph, a negative of which was made for the purpose of creating a new photograph by exposing the image onto silver bromide paper.

photographic print/copy on silver bromide (paper)

Explanation:
You do need to get across that this is a copy photograph of an original photograph produced via a negative and then exposed onto silver bromide paper. It is not just a photo made from a pre-existing original negative.

I think if you have no further context, Lisa, that something like 'copy of photographic print on silver bromide' would be ok. Presumably a new negative has been made of the original photo and a print made of that - the latter being what is exhibited/discussed.

Lisa, can you provide more context, please? Is this some process integral to an artist's work - i.e. taking photos of other (original) photos and incorporating them in their work? Or has this been done for conservation reasons, as in my note to kashew? Please clarify so we can help you properly.

This might help you understand the process: silver bromide paper is light sensitive. Choosing it as a final medium rather than other potential papers gives you some indication of the process in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_paper

agree  Tony M: Indeed, that's exactly what it is; the trouble is, here we don't have enough context to know what it's a dupe of, and hence, can't arrive at a better term...
13 mins
  -> Exactly, let's hope Lisa has that context or can acquire it.
