Piston Coring

Today piston coring is one of the more common sea floor sampling methods. The piston corer was invented in 1947 by Professor Borje Kullenberg to enable the Swedish Deep Sea Expedition to collect long samples of sediment, up to 24 meters long, from beneath the sea floor. This tool acquires samples that are virtually undisturbed, making this tool and modified versions of it a staple in modern sea floor sampling.

Piston core

The piston corer is used to recover sediments from the uppermost section of seafloor, and has a maximum penetration of about 20 m. Coring technology has not changed much over the last 50 years, and consists of a heavy 1.5 tonne 'head weight' mounted on top of a long metal barrel. A trigger arm is attached to the head weight, with a length of chain and a small 1 m-long trigger core extending from this to just beyond the end of the core barrel. When the trigger core penetrates the seabed, the weight comes off the trigger mechanism releasing the head weight and main core barrel, which then freefall into the seabed.

Inside the metal core barrel is a thick plastic liner. Sediment is pushed into this liner, and is held in place by a vacuum mechanism and inverted metal teeth on the cutting end of the core. When the corer returns on deck the plastic liner is extruded and cut into 1 m-long sections. These are then split lengthwise and one half is retained as an archive and the other half is described and used for sampling.
