Portuguese term or phrase: motivos maiores
Hi, this is taken from a training/assessment manual for managers. It describes various qualities for employees to assess how well they are performing. This part comes from the following sentence:

"Tenta com alguma frequência ter um efeito específico no outro através de um único método de persuasão (exemplos:
apela aos dados, a motivos maiores; utiliza exemplos concretos, auxiliares visuais ou demonstrações)"

The literal translation of these words doesn't mean anything to me in English in this context, can anyone either confirm that a literal translation such as "bigger/greater motives/reasons" works in this context or suggest an alternative?

Thanks for your help.

I think the words "motives", "reasons" would be meaningless in the context and that the author has not expressed himself very well.

Thank you, I think this one was definitely the most relevant for the context. I adapted it slightly but kept the translation along the same lines as your suggestion.

greater/more relevant reasons

Explanation:
This means the manager gives the employees greater or more relevant reasons for doing something (as a persuasion technique).

I would use 'greater reasons'.

higher-order motives

Explanation:
If the text you are translating has to do with “motivation theory”, probably this is the best term in English. Once the first-order/lower-order or “basic” motives (the need to feed, the need to be safe and so on) have been fulfilled, a person will only be motivated by higher-order motives (the need to be loved, the need to fulfill one's potential and so on).
