French term or phrase: suspendus aux chances
I'm trying to find a translation for "suspendus aux chances" in this phrase:

"chaque homme et chaque femme étaient suspendus aux chances du mouvement révolutionnaire"

I was thinking of "rooting for", or "holding out for" the revolutionary movement, but was hoping to find something better.

The other expression I was considering was "holding their breath over", but I don't think that that would express their support (seems just to imply that they were waiting).

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanks

"suspendus aux chances"
on tenterhooks over the fate

Explanation:
"On tenterhooks
anxiously waiting for news about someone or something She was on tenterhooks until her son called and said he was not hurt.
Etymology: based on the literal meaning of tenterhook (a hook that holds cloth that is stretched to dry), suggesting that someone's emotions are tightly stretched like a piece of cloth held by tenterhooks

Other possibilities for "chances": outcome, hopes. Though I prefer "fate".

"suspendus aux chances"
hung onto OR (was) riveted to the prospects

Explanation:
A literal translation might work, actually, though one usually hangs on to someone's every word, not prospects or chances of success, so I'm not sure how idiomatic it sounds.

Riveted to is another option, but again, not sure how idiomatic it sounds here.

Example sentence(s):
  • ...every man and woman hung onto the prospects of the Palestinian revolutionary movement.
  • ...every man and woman was riveted to the prospects of the Palestinian revolutionary movement.

hinged on

Explanation:
even if you don't use this, it is worth looking up as some of its synonyms given in dictionaries have not been suggested yet

Example sentence(s):
  • The future of every man and woman hinged on.........

Were hanging on to the chance (s) of . . .

Explanation:
I would use "hanging on" as it does maintain the idea of "suspendu" in some sense. You could also use "hanging on to the possibility of" perhaps.
