Finally, I think if I use AIR CONDITIONING and AIR PURIFICATION it won't actually matter which term corresponds to which.

Salih's reference certainly merits thought. A long time ago, I did speak to Linguee about their system as they tend to use the same source too many times on a page so you think you have a force impression and that is partly the case here
The other thing I noticed is that nearly half of the references end in .ca so I wonder if this is a 'Canadian' thing.
In France, I have la clime as they say in my car and in my flat and Americans have air conditioning in their homes and cars (see for instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_air_conditioning
So if that is correct, what is 'conditionnement' d'air' ? It seems to be a synonym at times for air conditioning and different at other times. If you take for instance
http://www.ultraproprete.com/societe/mastair.html , it says 'MASTAIR est une société spécialisée dans les domaines de conditionnement d'air complexe répondant aux besoins des technologies de pointe où la maîtrise de la CONTAMINATION et de l'environnement est primordiale au bon fonctionnement des procédés technologiques pointus.'
