Could someone explain what this is in English? This is a professorial rank (title) from a Portuguese university, now not in existence anymore. But I think it is a denomination of a professor (referring to distinction or perhaps a chair of department).

O termo, de origem européia e adotado no Brasil caiu em desuso em 1968. Professor catedrático é o professor que tem a cátedra de uma disciplina universitária e orienta os outros professores universitários sobre a mesma. Nem todo professor universitário era professor catedrático, nomeado por concurso.

que prevaleceu nas universidades brasileiras até a
