In this passage, the interviewee talks about how an architect with whom he used to work is classified in relation to Niemeyer, and he creates an analogy ("tenho medo que o jogador atravesse na frente") to express how he feels about Niemeyer:

"Acho que é essa coisa de colocar ela [minha amiga arquiteta] como pós-Niemeyer... Tenho medo desse nome, por que eu tenho medo que o jogador atravesse na frente. (risos) Mas eu gosto muito dele."

I understand what the expression means in the context of soccer, but I can't figure out how it relates to his feelings towards Niemeyer. Any ideas of what he means by that?

Ou seja, o nome Neimeyer, mesmo sendo "pós-Neimeyer", por ser tão famoso, vai fazer o papel do jogador que atravessa na frente, roubando toda a atenção.
