English term or phrase: (the) investment in (the) manufacturing industries
Thus, investment in the manufacturing industries located in these countries substantially increased as from the mid-50s. The headquarters of these companies benefited not only from the earnings but also from the royalty payment and tax exemptions that the establishment of the companies enjoyed.

I have a question as regards the articles in the first part of the sentence: does it sound correct? Or is it better to say:

the investment in manufacturing industries...

Thanks!

Selected answer:Not the first "the".
Explanation:
The text as written is correct. "The manufacturing industries" is OK here as it refers to those "located in these countries". If it were just manufacturing industries in general, it would not require an article.

It depends.

Explanation:
There are a number of correct ways of writing this. Which one you choose depends upon what you want to communicate and what point you want to emphasise.

If you want to contrast direct investment in manufacturing industries as opposed to other types of support for those industries (e.g. training, tax incentives):
Thus, the investment in manufacturing industries located in these countries substantially increased as from the mid-50s.

If you want to highlight investment in the manufacturing industries, as opposed to e.g. the mining industry:
Thus, investment in the manufacturing industries located in these countries substantially increased as from the mid-50s.

If you are making a simple statement that doesn't relate to the presence or absence of either other forms of support or other types of industry:
Thus, investment in manufacturing industries located in these countries substantially increased as from the mid-50s.
