French term or phrase: boîtier
In an article about a book on all that goes into creating a piece of fine jewelry, the author talks about the people involved.

Le livre permet de découvrir l’ensemble des métiers, du dessinateur au **boîtier**. Cela permet-il de refléter la dimension d’œuvre collective inhérente à la haute joaillerie ?

It seems to me that the "boîtier" is a person in this context, perhaps involving the jewel case...

Can anyone enlighten me?

case

Explanation:
The only reference to boitier as a person that I can find refers to a postman. The case is most likely to be that of a powder compact or a watch

But there is of course nothing to stop you translating it as case-maker to keep it personal:)

Jewel case is normally "écrin"

Kimberley, re-reading your context sentence, I can only assume it is a case of sloppy writing. The author has forgotten that he is listing "métiers". With the copy, cut and paste methods we all use, these things happen. Naturally you will have to help him out with "case making" or some such.

neutral  philgoddard: It could be case maker, but it can't be case.

-> I was only using the Littré 7-volume dictionary. The usage could be a neologism, or as is often the case, a figment of the writer's fancy

neutral  emiledgar: with Phil. See mécanicien-boîtier. Seriously doubt the writer lost track of his list with only two items on it./ oh please!

-> mécanicien-boîtier, a genitive construction. English would simply reverse the order of the two words: case mechanic.
