French term or phrase: la chanteuse au nom d'oiseau
Hi, I was wondering if you can help with what 'nom d'oiseau' means in the sentence:
"cultivant plus d'un point commun avec la chanteuse au nom d'oiseau"

I have seen that 'nom d'oiseau' can be in the sense of name calling but that doesn't seem to apply here.

Thank you in advance.

Leila :)

Edith 'Sparrow'. Just a guess...

Given the context (on the discussions board), I wouldn't repeat her name again. It clearly appears enough times! Something along the lines of 'the singer known as the 'Little Sparrow' (as many others have suggested) would be much better.

the songstress named after a bird

Explanation:
If this is about Edith Piaf, then it simply refers to the fact that "piaf" in French can also refer to a certain kind of bird (FR "moineau" = EN "sparrow"):

google : piaf oiseau
http://goo.gl/0eDV0

The phrasing given here ("the songestress named after a bird") is a bit fanciful, and other, more standard phrasings could be possible (e.g., "the singer with a bird's name").

Even more fanciful might be "the songstress named after a sparrow" (or, more standard: "the songstress whose name means 'sparrow'") - if indeed we are talking about Edith Piaf here.

My top choice would be the (free) translation:

"the songstress named after a sparrow"

since this also is alliterative, adding a nice touch in the English.

the songbird

Explanation:
Retains the pun, as female singers can be referred to as songbirds, and sparrows appear to belong to the wider songbird family, according to Wikipedia (though I don't know enough about birds to be sure).
