Law/Patents - Law: Contract(s)
French term or phrase: mandant
This is a contract between a mandant (a joint stock-company) and a mandataire. The mandataire (agent) has been designated the task of collecting debts on behalf of the mandant. Here would mandant be 'principal'. I am asking such a basic question as I am in disagreement with a colleague as to the correct translation of 'mandant'. Our translations need to be consistent therefore the correct term needs to be found. He thinks mandant should be translated as Client. I have used appropriate reference materials and am confident it should be Prinicipal but I would like to be sure before inisiting on my translation. Many thanks for your understanding and help.

Explanation:
the fact that the principal is also something else - here "the client" doesn't change the only relevant fact for the purpose of translating that in relation to his agent he's his principal

If the driver of the car happens to be your brother, you're not going to translate "driver" by "frère"?

Employer/Undertaker

Explanation:
These term have comprehensive sense in contracts when referring to a actual or legal entity who appoints other party of a contract (agreement) to be an Agent/Representative/Undertaker/Contractor, as the case might be.

disagree  Cetacea: undertaker and employer are not the same, but they're both wrong. @writeaway: This is not funny at all.
