This is a quote from the book The Journey’s Echo (1963) by Freya Stark.

It's being used in one of the slides for a presentation on culture.

  -> No, it doesn't have to do with Africa, but what is represented by the phrase "dark continent" in English is the exotic allure of the lesser known parts of Africa. However, it may not be the best solution compared with some others that have come up since.
