French term or phrase: l’origine du repère
This is taken from an analysis of data on hip replacement parts - the various size ranges available, etc. I am confused by exactly what 'l’origine du repère' means here... any ideas? See *** below for the term. It seems it must be a mathematical/statistical term - point of reference? Starting point?

Having noted the other contributions about co-ordinates, etc. I have chosen this answer as this was pretty much what it meant in a general way... many thanks to all contributors, very helpful.

origin of the coordinate system

Explanation:
This is a purely mathematical definition since a coordinate system would have to have been defined to take length measurements.

un repère (du plan) = Cartesian coordinate system
