The shaft is decorated in a repeating motif known as snake-and-boss. Bosses are knot shapes and the five large ones on the head of the cross correspond to the five wounds Christ received during the crucifixion. Snakes weave out from and around the bosses. These animals often represent evil and the fall of humanity. But here, they symbolise wisdom and, because they shed their skins, they can be a metaphor for the resurrection of Christ
