"L’inégalité économique est l’ours que personne n’a remarqué."

I thought of elephant in the room, but that's something everyone can see but nobody wants to discuss, whereas this is something people don't seem to have noticed.

Explanation:
Difficult cos the definition of this term is 'obvious, evident' which is not exactly what you ask for.

But the evidence was always there, just like the elephant in the room.

The expression does mean (for me) , that although sm was evident, it was NOT immediately perceived
