collection box (collecting) tin Explanation: Also used in the UK, specifically for the round ones (nowadays made of plastic!) that used to be carried by collectors in the street, which always made a satsifying (or embarrassing!) 'clang' when you dropped in your penny... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 18 mins (2013-03-07 09:47:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Here's an old one: http://www.poppyscotland.org.uk/education/public/media/PS36_... ...and a newer one: http://www.blogs.redcross.org.uk.gridhosted.co.uk/wp-content... |

collection box..? donation box Explanation: "Donation box" is frequently used in the U.S. Example: http://www.rmhc.com/how-you-can-help/other-ways-to-get-invol... A dime here. A quarter there. It might not seem like much. But when millions give, the amount those coins help children and families worldwide is truly amazing. The RMHC Donation Boxes are one of our biggest ongoing fundraisers. It’s from people like you filling the Donation Boxes with nickels, dimes and quarters. Last year alone, $27 million was collected. ----------------------------------- In Christian religious services, a collection "plate" is often passed around. Sometimes a basket is used as well. |
