Cobbing An ore processing term. Cobbing is the breaking off from the ore as much waste as possible with chisel type hammers. Cobbing was normally carried out by Bal maidens.
After cobbing ore was sent for Bucking.

Bal Maidens The woman working on the dressing floors. Bal maidens normally undertook processes such as spalling,cobbing and bucking.

Bucking An ore processing term. Bucking is the crushing of ore after spalling and cobbing. It was originally a manual process undertaken by Bal Maidens using large flat faced hammers against iron slabs.
In later years Bucking was sometimes mechanised using a crusher.
After Bucking the ore was then sent for jigging.

Jigging An ore dressing term. Jigging was the separation of ore by moving it up and down in water on a sieve. Originally this was undertaken manually but by the 1830's a lever operated machine was introduced and also sometimes these were powered by water wheels.
