I know this term has come up countless times, but I can't see any entry that fits this context.
This appears on a Brazilian payslip for a large power company that works in many different fields. The employee in question is an automation engineer, not sure if that helps to contextualise things...
It appears in the payslip on the line that gives the employee's name, position and department, and the month to which the payslip refers. "Chapa" is followed by a number. I can tell you that this number is the same on all of the employee's payslips for the year, so it is not a variable figure.
I can't think that it would be the employee's licence plate for his car, because that doesn't usually appear on a payslip.
Any feedback would be very gratefully received.
Apologies if this is obvious to someone who lives in Brazil. I work mainly in Portuguese from Portugal.

While I think some variation of ‘employee registration number’ or ‘employee ID’ makes sense here because it’s on a payslip, it’s worth noting that ‘name badge’ or similar could be appropriate in a different context:
