Sugestão.
"To picture something" é uma expressão verbal que equivale a dar-se conta finalmente de algo que já está no ar _ tal como quando a ficha, já inserida, cai por fim dentro do orelhão. "Sentir-se" é, também de fato, o que se passa.
Começar a acordar é meio reduntante.
Eu prefiro "scene" a "situation", mas dá na mesma ao final, com a diferença de que "scene" combina mais com o verbo nessa sugestão.
Opto por "cruel" por ser mais curto do que "painful" e, portanto, mais contundente como "ficha caindo". Mas se for para fazer tradução literal, é claro que é "painful".
A opção com "to dawn on" também é legal, mas teria que ser "dawn on her". A frase está na terceira pessoa e a ela se refere.
