French term or phrase: jugement de condamnation
From a letter from a lawyer concerning a (non-criminal) court case involving a lease:

Il me semble par ailleurs excessif d’indiquer qu’il n’y aurait pas eu de résultats puisque nous avons obtenu un jugement de condamnation.

The defendant was imposed a sentence by the judge.

simply "a ruling imposing a sentence" or "a sentence ruling"? or is there a more fixed expression for this?

court ruling (or judgment)
Explanation:
We can only use "sentence" or "condemn" in criminal cases. Since this is a civil case, I would dance around the "condamnation" and just refer to the "court ruling" or "court judgment". If it were "jugement de condamnation à payer..." I would say "judgment ordering payment of...."

judgment (entered) against the defendant

Explanation:
sentence and conviction, as per FHS Bridge and Mark H., are of course criminal.

Judgment against the defendant (Scots: defender) avoids having to choose between the (E&W) claimant, (Scots) pursuer or (US/Can.) plaintiff.
