French term or phrase: bruit de fond
Hi,
"Pour fiabiliser les mesures et limiter le bruit de fond (comptages parasites), on prévoit avantageusement de blinder le capteur."

we are dealing with "source radioactives" rayonnement cosmic et tellurique.

I have found a few translations "random fluctuation", "background noise" (GDT) and also in a specialised glossary "background" however I'm uncomfortable translating it into one word here.

Your help is required and is highly appreciated :)
Thank you

noise/interference

Explanation:
juste 'noise' ou 'interference' : on blinde le capteur pour limiter les interférences

'to limit interference ([comptages parasites])' va bien, je pense

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
neutral  Tony M: Although the idea of 'background' is IMHO crucial here, I think it inadvisable to use the word alone, as it so inevitably connotes 'background radiation', which is not, I believe, what we are actually talking about here.
