That's right. And although I suppose a trip from the US to Mexico would involve crossing the Gulf of Mexico, if you went down the Atlantic side (not of course if you went down the West Coast), I'm not sure you'd call this journey a crossing.

My only doubt about "passage" is whether it's a word non-seamen would naturally use (the speaker/writer here may not be a seaman).

I agree with Charles, not all passages are crossings, but all crossings are passages.
However, among seamen, the term in general use is passage for both.

It's impossible to tell which word would be most suitable without knowing the nature of this "travesía". If it involved crossing a stretch of water (from the UK to France, from Europe to America, even from Montevideo to Buenos Aires...), then "crossing", but not all "travesías" are crossings; it can mean any "viaje por mar o por aire". You wouldn't call it a "crossing" if it didn't involve going from one side of something to the other, for example from New York to Miami by sea, though that might be called a "travesía".
