French term or phrase: à la toiser
This is a piece of fiction (French>UK English) in which a character is describing a small, narrow room that is crowded with people – she calls it a 'pièce à la toiser'.

I understand that 'toiser' refers to measuring space approximately by the height of a person (approx. 6 feet) or more figuratively to the idea of looking someone up and down.

Reference: http://www.cnrtl.fr/lexicographie/toiser

Should I infer from this that we're talking about a room with a low ceiling, i.e. this is a comment on the height of the room, or is it a more general description, suggesting that the room is packed to capacity?

Many thanks in advance for any ideas.

Explanation:
Sorry it's a long translation, but this seems a tricky one. Having read through your reference definition, I see it's mostly referring to studying people, either literally for measuring, or more generally, looking with a critical eye. Maybe our popular English term "people-watching" would fit here?
