all or most of their life... Explanation: All of their life, perhaps beginning after the infant stage, because children do suffer from neurotic symptoms, or the majority of years of their lives prior to the therapy. Liefetime may also refer to the assumption that the symptoms will continue for the rest of a person's life in case they go untreated. |

a long period of time with symptoms Explanation: not literally a "lifetime" usually since it would be unusual for children to have neurotic symptoms. It's used in a figurative way to express, these symptoms have been experienced for quite some time now. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 32 mins (2013-01-12 00:33:09 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "lifetime" has this meaning of persistent, deep-rooted and enduring http://thesaurus.com/browse/lifetime Definition: lasting Synonyms: constant, continuing, deep-rooted, enduring, for life, inveterate, lifetime , livelong, long-lasting, long-lived, long-standing, old, perennial, permanent, persistent -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 35 mins (2013-01-12 00:36:23 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Because these neurotic symptoms are so deep rooted and have persisted so long, it is obviously impossible to completely cure somebody in 4-6 weeks but there should be enough of an improvement so that they (the sufferers or patients) will continue with the programme -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 14 hrs (2013-01-12 14:06:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- yes, it's true that small children can have neurotic symptoms but, as I said above, it is unusual and far more usual to see actual neurotic symptoms begin in puberty. "lifetime" meaning "All my life" = from the time I was born (usually "my ENTIRE lifetime" to stress it is since birth) but here I don't believe it is since birth but rather for a long period, possibly from childhood. |
