German term or phrase: unfrei ab Lager
The following sentence is confusing me somewhat:

Die Preise für manche Möbel, Bodenbeläge und dem Zubehör sind unfrei ab Lager Filderstadt.

First of all, I'm uncertain as to how to translate 'unfrei' despite having looked at many suggestions. I'm also not sure as to whether 'ab Lager' here means 'ex works' or 'from the Filderstadt warehouse' or whether 'unfrei ab Lager' means something in particular altogether. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This comes from the 'Auftragsannahme und Preise' section of a company's terms and conditions.

neutral  philgoddard: This implies that you have to collect it yourself or pay someone else to do so, which does not appear to be the case. It says "die Preise sind unfrei", which to me implies "we do deliver, but it's not free".

an additional charge is made for delivering ...from the warehouse

Explanation:
I think a plain English translation would be better - things like "carriage forward ex works" and "freight collect" sound oldfashioned, and ordinary members of the public won't understand them. So:

An additional charge is made for delivering some items of furniture, floor coverings and accessories from our Filderstadt warehouse.

agree  Cetacea: I'd prefer plain German in the original as well, but I'm not sure these terms are actually aimed at the general public.

Ex Works

Explanation:
EXW or Ex Works means that a seller has the goods ready for collection at his premises (works, factory, warehouse, plant) on the date agreed upon. The buyer pays all transportation costs and also bears the risks for bringing the goods to their final destination

--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 1 day1 hr (2013-01-10 16:36:00 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------

the goods are ready for collection at the premises which can mean factory or wharehouse etc and this is an international term as per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incoterms
but you could also say "ex wharehouse Filderstadt"

  • Ex Works
