Spanish term or phrase: diario popular
In the past I think you could translate this term as 'tabloid' but today a lot of the 'Broadsheets' now have tabloid format but are not diarios populares. Popular newspaper sounded too literal to me? It basically refers to newspapers like the Daily Mail or the Sun which are read by a lot of people and are relatively easy to read through. Any ideas?

agree  Charles Davis: If the reference is generic (diarios populares), this is just right, but of course it depends entirely on the context in which the Spanish term is used.

I should make the point that "mass-circulation newspaper" is used as a euphemism for tabloid newspaper. Some members seem to be misunderstanding this point and taking it literally.

neutral  Carol Gullidge: unless they're local papers, I think they're ALL "mass circulation"

-> I don't agree. Dailies with a more targeted public would not be called this.

agree  Charles Davis: This is probably the best bet if it's referring to one particular newspaper.
29 mins

disagree  philgoddard: Agree with Carol. The New York Times is a mass-circulation newspaper, but it's not a "diario popular".
