English translation: Drawing room theatre

French term or phrase: théâtre de salon
This is from a piece about playwright, Robert Lepage. I think the context (below) makes it clear what the expression means, but I honestly don't know the equivalent in English for this type of theatre. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!

Plutôt que de faire du *théâtre de salon*, où les gens parlent de choses banales et ont une vie très quotidienne, très horizontale, on invite des personnages qui viennent de l’enfer ou qui viennent des cieux.

kitchen sink drama


Explanation:
This movement somewhat predates your playwright's work, but the term is used quite loosely and I think it fits quite well for "choses banales et ... vie ... quotidienne".
