English language (monolingual) [Non-PRO]
Law/Patents - Law (general) / Articles of Association
English term or phrase: between persons
This is an article taken from the Articles of Association of a charity in the UK.

"Subject to the provisions of the Act and to Article 42, the Trustees to retire by
rotation shall be those who have been longest in office since their last appointment or
reappointment, but as between persons who became or were last reappointed Trustees on the same day those to retire shall (unless they otherwise agree among themselves)
be determined by lot."

Does anyone know what "between persons" mean in this context? and I also can't get the meaning of the remainder of the article (the part after "between persons"), it just doesn't make much sense.

Any help would be much appreciated.

disagree  John Alphonse (X): No, not exactly! :) "Between" here does not directly refer to the choice between persons, it is delineating those who the choice will be made among... Sorry, wrong again, whom would be addressing one person.
5 hrs
-> The choice is between one person and another, or between the persons appointed on the same day. Not "delineating" and I think you mean "whom", not "who". "Among" risks implying self-selection. // "Who" = subject, "whom" = object, irrespective of number.

Explanation:
"...'in regards to' persons who became or were last reappointed Trustees on the same day (add comma here) those to retire shall (unless they otherwise agree among themselves) be determined 'randomly'."

The ones "among" the group described to retire are determined "randomly"

"Between" here does not directly refer to the choice between persons, it is delineating those who the choice will be made among...

neutral  B D Finch: "Regards", plural, is what you sign a letter off with and it should be "with", not "in". http://www.englishforums.com/English/InRegardsToWithRegardTo...

neutral  Tony M: I don't think this really explains it better; the choice is being made between two or more people
