Pricey Co-Payments for Specialist Visits, But Regions Have a Choice

The Italian Senate has amended and passed the package of austerity measures (known in Italian as the "manovra finanziaria") first made public at the beginning of July, which are intended to balance the Italian state budget by the end of 2014, and ease concerns about high government debt levels. The only significant change in terms of public healthcare is the immediate imposition of a EUR10 (USD14.13) co-payment, referred to in Italy as a "superticket" ("ticket" is the word used in Italy for a medical co-payment) for visits to medical specialists, rather than in 2013-14, as first envisaged.
