Salve, sto traducendo delle frasi in inglese e mi trovo di fronte a una struttura verbale insolita. I verbi al Simple Past messi tra virgolette si riferiscono chiaramente a una situazione esistente, e quindi mi sorge il dubbio se tradurli o meno al presente, anzichè al passato come dovrebbe essere secondo me.

Bill applied to join the police last week, but he ''wasn't'' tall enough

Are you deaf? I ''asked'' how old you were.

I'm sorry we left Liverpool. it ''was'' such a nice place.

Do you remember that nice couple we met on holiday? They ''were'' German, werent' they?

Mi chiedo se i verbi messi tra virgolette devono essere tradotti con la forma verbale al presente, oppure se in italiano vanno semplicemente tradotti al passato, anche se si tratta di una situazione esistente nel presente. Ecco un esempio di traduzione di una frase :

Ho avuto il lavoro perchè ''sono'' un bravo autista.

nel caso specifico direi senza esitare "Sei sordo? Ti ho chiesto quanti anni hai"

e userei il presente anche negli altri esempi, tranne che per quello dei tedeschi
