An alternative electrical current is an oscillatory movement; see "Mathematics of AC voltages" in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternating_current] the oscillation on both side of the connection between the production unit and the grid should be synchronised - if they are not there is an angular shit (décalage de phase), a rotation/shift of the phase of one current in relation to the other.
