I wouldn't say so, no. I think 'playboy' is already relatively pejorative, and is often used to suggest someone a lot older than the word 'boy' might suggest. The fact that his age is actually stated makes me feel that no further qualification is necessary, or desirable; the irony works quite well as it is ;-)

Doesn't playboy usually refer to younger (20-40 yrs) men; any chance it's used here in a pejorative sense (as in, 53 years-old and still trying to act as if he were a young stud)?

Not that middle-aged and older men can't be "playboys", but I wonder if playboy on its own is correct here, maybe something like "ageing playboy in his early fifties" to give the sense that he is trying to keep up appearances?

And is playboy even the right term to begin with? Is/was the man a womanizer/philanderer (his preference for young boys notwithstanding)? Perhaps dandy or fop is more suitable?
