French term or phrase: l'univers
bonjour, je ne suis pas certaine de ma traduction en anglais pour ce terme, dans le sens 'l'univers de cette collection', l'univers de cette ligne.....le travail doit être rendu avant midi heure française. Merci.

English translation:concept, style
Explanation:
Just a couple of solutions. I don't always translate "univers" the same way. "World" sometimes fits, but in fashion texts I find "concept" or "style" often work better.

neutral  Kévin Bernier: To be honest, I'm not quite sure myself about how fitting "world" will be in this context. However, I find "style" or "concept" really don't give the same idea at all as words, which kind of bothers me.

-> To me they do. The "univers" of artists are what they draw on for inspiration, their influences which make up their individual style.

world

Explanation:
The meaning of this sentence in French completely points us towards "world" as the best possible answer, but I'm wondering if there are others.

"the fashion world" for example, would very well translate to "l'univers de la mode" in French. I think world is the word you should be going for.

--------------------------------------------------

It depends on the rest of the sentence, but a nice way to phrase this would be "This collection and its world..." or maybe even, "this collection and the world it brings..."

The second one is more catchy I find.

agree  writeaway: it's the most obvious/usual translation. up to Asker to judge if the English suits his context. marketing is always tricky and marketing into a foreign language adds to the fun

-> Thank you. I think it depends on the rest of the sentence. With my suggestion, I think "this collection and the world it brings" is the best solution (see my note in my answer). Other answers might come up with better suited sentences though.

neutral  B D Finch: Though "world" can certainly be used, " ... and the world it brings" really doesn't sound very English.

  -> You may be right.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: I think world does do the trick, but that it works better still if followed by something ike "conjured up by" : the world conjured up by the collection....

Everything

Explanation:
"This collection and everything it..." (expresses, represents, conjures up etc.). I think this sounds fairly natural in English, although it's hard to know without having the full sentence/context. It can be adapted fairly easily to suit.

agree  writeaway: marketing always requires a lot of fiddling to get it right. unfortunately for some, the fiddling has to been done via an innate sense of the target language and a feel for what 'works'.

Pitti Menswear S/S 2013
Valentino
Seamlessness was the message of this collection. There was an almost clinical tone to the items, so clean, cool and compact. The youth of the models, combined with the flawlessness of the items they sported, gave them an air of preened spoiled Italian school boys – each meticulously dressed by their doting mothers in pristine uniforms of shirts and fitted trousers.

[...] the collection gets its character from the blatantly aggressive phrasing printed on the front of the shirts. The series includes a tie-dye feature reading ‘Choose Death,’ a unisex racer back tank that says ‘Slave Boy,’ [...] The message of this collection is clear, concise and angry.

The message of this collection is basically about how strange it is, to find others strange. I want to encourage people to first look at themselves, before they judge others. Everyone designs his or her life in a certain fashion.

Islamic fashion need not be dreary, that's the message of this collection of Islamic fashions in Tehran.

neutral  writeaway: it's hard to say since there is virtually no context. we can't see what came before it. So this is a very long shot and would only work under certain circumstances. definitely not routine/standard solution
2 hrs
-> Neither is "l'univers de cette collection" routine or standard. I agree that more context is desired. But even with very limited info, I prefer "message" to the other suggestions... truly. ;-)
