| Reference: Definition, dictionaries Reference information: "la competencia es, entonces, la porción o parte de la jurisdicción de los diversos órganos jurisdicionales y, a la vez, la aptitud de ellos para juzgar determinados asuntos". Enrique Véscovi, Manual de Derecho Procesal, tomo I. p. 170. Ed. Idea, 1984. He also explains that the distinction between "jurisdicción" and "competencia" does not appear in all countries. In your examples, I think it does refer to the measure of jurisdictional power. Alcaraz Varó (and every time I open it, I think of Miguel García Uriburu!) offers "jurisdiction, jurisdictional capacity, power, duty, competence, capacity, faculty, authority, cognizance". It doesn't really help you decide. Cabenellas and Hoague suggest 1. competency, competence, ability. 2. jurisdiction, jurisdictional capacity or competency or competence... Hmm... Finally, Black's competence: 2. The capacity of an official body to do something <the court 's competence to enter a valid judgement>. vs. competency: 1. The mental ability to understand... [no] 2. A criminal defendant's ability to stand trial [no]. jurisdiction: 1. A government's general power to exercise authority over all persons and things... 2.
