First point: It is evident that this subject is about the university education because the expression includes the term “universities”. Second point: the term is “universities” and not “university”. This implies the expression it about more than one university because is “universities” the plural of “university”. In Spanish language, now we have to terms: “universidad” and “universidades”. The problem in this case is “progression”. This term is frequently associated with mathematics: “arithmetic progression” and “geometric progression”. But we are not talking about mathematics now because we are talking about “universities”. However the term “arithmetic progression” could help us to advance a little into the subject. An arithmetic progression is for example: 1, 2, 3, 4... This concept shows us that we are talking about something / somebody that moves forward. Of course, if we talk about universities, they are students or potential students are who advance into the university or universities. We said before “advance”, “progress”. The students or potential students progress... Very important observation: “progression” doesn’t imply “jump into”. For this reason, in this case we cannot talk about a direct “entry” from the street to the university or universities. Definitively, we are not talking about a direct admission to the universities. There are a “progression” between the moment that a potential student says I want study medicine or engineering and the moment that he/she comes into the first course of the specific career of medicine or engineering. Okay, what is really this “progression”? This is the question mark that till now we didn’t solve. Normally, when we want to study an important university, nobody says to us: “-Come on, here you have a seat in the medicine school!” Frequently, before somebody opens the door to this seat in medicine, we have to pass for a “progression”. In other words, we have to walk across a series of steps. What kind of steps?: courses, learning activities, tests… And now we are near to the meaning of “progression”. The “progression” is a special course to achieve “a level” that will guarantee that we are in condition to begin the specific study of medicine or engineering. In the British Universities the “Progression Universities” is this previous process that open the doors to different universities of England and Wales. And this “Progression” is through the “International Foundation Year”. This “International Foundation Year” is the first step to the choice of degrees in a series of universities. But till now, all of these concepts look very complicated to express in Spanish. In Spanish language, this “International Foundation Year” is a “curso académico preparatorio para el ingreso directo a las distintas universidades y disciplinas que se estudian en Inglaterra y Gales”. If we want to translate “International Foundation Year” we have to say: “Año Internacional de Fundación”. What is the meaning of “foundation” or in Spanish “fundación”? It is build the “foundation” or “los cimientos para poder acceder a las carreras universitarias de Inglaterra y Gales”. After all this long explanation, everybody will understand that the “Progression” is not really to “jump into the university directly from the street”. Definitively, “the Progression Universities” is the “International Foundation Year” that is a special academic course of one year “common” the most important universities of England and Wales”. But if we translate directly “Progression Universities” to Spanish as: “Progresión a las Universidades”, I don’t believe that the majority of the people will understand us. For this reason, in this case, my proposal includes a series of suggestions to give you the possibility to decide: - “Preparación para las Universidades” - “Preparación común para las Universidades” - “Preparación común para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Preparación Internacional para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Preparación Internacional de un año para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Curso Internacional de Preparación de un año para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Curso Preparatorio para las Universidades” - “Curso de Preparación común para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Curso Internacional Preparatorio para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Curso Internacional Preparatorio de un año para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Curso de Fundación para las Universidades” - “Curso de Fundación para el Ingreso a las Universidades” - “Curso Internacional de Fundación para las Universidades” - “Curso Internacional de Fundación de un año para las Universidades” - “Fundación Internacional de un año” - Progresión para las Universidades - Progresión para el Ingreso a las Universidades (If you use in Spanish: “Progresión” you have to explain between brackets: “Progresión = Curso Preparatorio para el Ingreso las Universidades” o “Curso Internacional Preparatorio para el Ingreso a las Universidades” o Curso Internacional Preparatorio Común para el Ingreso a las Universidades” From all these alternatives of my proposal you also can invent new alternatives.
