Is there a literary English idiom closer in meaning than "be the last straw"? I do not want to use to exasperate.

as is: overfill/fill up the cup (of patience)

Explanation:
While different phrases an be suggested here, it can be actually be as is::
overfill/fill up the cup of patience

I believe (not sure though,) that this is a classical phrase which comes from the Bible and therefore it is used and it reads the same way around the world...
:)
(Examples can be be found in quite different contexts.
& this phrase is also listed in "Dictionary of English Idioms and Phrases"

neutral  Michael Korovkin: yeah, for translating the Old Testament perhaps... C.f. "dude, thou hast flled the Cup of my Patience, you dig?" :)

-> Come, come. It's used here and there, from time to time. No religious overtones, just plain metaphor...
