Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general) / Quality management
French term or phrase: phase avant-série Vs phase pré-série
These two terms appear side by side in the project life-cycle section of a quality management document. I'm not sure what the difference is between the two terms, nor how they should be translated. Any help would be much appreciated.

Phase Avant-Série (AVS) Phase Pré-Série (PS)

They also appear as:

Lot d’AVS
Lot de PS

Unfortunately, they occur in a list so there is no surrounding context to help out.

Prototype batch / Pre-series batch
Explanation:
I can't honestly see that their is a lot of difference, except perhaaps some final adjustment after the prototype batch before final series production.
Hopefully there may be other bright(er) ideas.

sample [lot or batch] Vs "batch lead"

Explanation:
My own experience with thatb terminolgy comes from the corrugated cardboard industry but I don't think it's industry-specific, manufacturing QA is pretty much the same regardless.

- "Batch lead" is a part of a regular batch run taken up by the initial setup and fine tuning. As such, it is allowed and expected to have a higher than normal rate of defects and other issues (this is "pré-série").

- The other is a small sample run mostly for demo, proof of concept or, well, sampe purposes. Far as I know, this is a less stable term with variation possible depending on how exactly that pre-run (another name:-) small batch is used.

disagree  Ronald van Riet: they both happen BEFORE proper production begins, sample would occur at various moments DURING production.

-> Nope, you are totally wrong about when "sample" can occur. It's not only during production as you mistakenly think. Perhaps there is some value in reading explanation after all?
