Context: parte del discurso de bienvenida del rector de la universidad que será la sede del evento sobre minería.

"Nos encaminamos al centenario, y podemos sentirnos orgullosos por haber continuado por el rumbo que desde su fundación en 1917, orienta el auténtico quehacer de nuestra Universidad: ser una institución cuyas guías son la excelencia, el liderazgo, la democracia, los derechos humanos, el desarrollo y la innovación."

I've found various entries for "quehacer" in the glossaries (e.g. scene, work), but I don'ttthink they fit in here. I was thinking more of "authentic mission or calling", but would appreciate your comments.

Explanation:
I'm afraid "mission" is too business jargon-ish and "harto trillado" nowadays for my liking. I think the more classic "calling" - the asker's own suggestion - is more fitting for such an august institution as a seat of learning.
