Like all the reasons for my fame, it does not quite square with the truth. [....] I have never been able to get the public Toller to **sit faithfully on the facts*** of the private one.

Le narrateur (Toller) a dit à plusieurs reprises que sa personnalité publique était en quelque sorte un mensonge, une illusion, qu'à aucun moment elle ne cadre avec la réalité des choses.
Or pour moi, "to sit on the facts", cela veut dire "passer sous silence", "s'asseoir dessus"... Ce qui serait donc en contradiction avec le message général. Non?
Et l'adverbe "faithfully" ajoute à ma confusion.
